DNA Testing
What is DNA?
A single cell is all it takes to create a human. Each cell in our body contains a nucleus which holds our genetic blueprints known as DNA. The primary purpose of DNA is to make copies of itself, so that it can turn that single cell into trillions of cells, forming a human.
The genetic information within DNA is passed on through generations with half of the information coming from the mother and half from the father. DNA is a component of virtually every cell in the human body. It is a powerful tool because each person’s DNA is different from every other person, with the exception of identical twins.
Why Establishing Paternity is Important
A child is entitled to the sense of belonging and identity that comes from knowing both parents. Establishing paternity in cases of unwed parents often has an important emotional and psychological benefit for the child. Also, until there is a determination that a biological father is the legal father, the child has no right to receive financial support from the father, to inherit from the father, or to obtain other benefits such as insurance through the father.
Likewise, until paternity is legally established, the biological father has no legal rights to the child, such as parenting time and participation in major decisions about the child. Additionally, since genetic diseases are inherited, knowing your biological ancestry can be useful in proactive medical care and organ transplantation.
Legal DNA Testing
If the test is for peace of mind, we will provide a private paternity test. If the testing is for legal purposes, such as child support, child custody or immigration applications, we will work with you to schedule a legal paternity test.
In order for a DNA test to be legal in a court of law, identification must be verified (with a birth certificate of the child and a picture I.D. of the adult), a photograph will be taken at the time of the collection, and the sample collection will be conducted by a qualified professional.
A Simple Process
- Identity is verified.
- Swabs are taken from the inside of the mouth of each person to be tested.
- The samples are securely sealed for transport.
- Samples are sent to the laboratory for analysis.
- The doctor receives and signs off on results within 7 – 10 days.
- Results are released to only the appropriate people. (Person paying for the test and/or the judge who ordered the test.)
